Disappointment – one of the most frustrating emotions to deal with – shows up when there is a discrepancy between how you want things to be and how they actually are. Maybe it comes about because you were planning on getting a promotion at work, only to find out it was given to someone else. Or perhaps a relationship you had counted on lasting forever comes to an abrupt halt.
Unfortunately, as long as you are invested in a certain outcome, there is a very real chance you’ll have to deal with disappointment. Instead of becoming engulfed in it, try following these tips and maybe next time it won’t give you such a devastating blow.
Tip 1: Allow Yourself to Wallow- Temporarily
Sometimes, when you’re dealing with a very large disappointment, it can be tough to turn your thoughts into something positive right away. Allow yourself time to cry, yell, throw a pity party – anything you need to do to get it all out. This will ensure that the residual effects of this disappointment don’t show up down the road.
Tip 2: Turn Your Attention Elsewhere
Give yourself a break from thinking of what could have been. Treat yourself to the things you love – spending time with friends and family, going to your favorite restaurant, reading an engrossing novel.
Part of the process of accepting “what is” is appreciating what you already have. Try to make a list of all the things currently in your life that you have immense gratitude for – even if it is just the fact that you get to wake up every morning to a new day.
Tip 3: Open Yourself Up to the Possibilities
You may be convinced that a certain missed opportunity was the best thing for you, but often times the Universe has a bigger plan for us that we aren’t yet able to see. So maybe you didn’t get that promotion because there is a better job for you that will be offered very soon. Maybe your partner left because there is someone better suited for you.
So open yourself up to the idea that something bigger and better may be waiting just around the corner.
