For many, achieving a restful night’s sleep is an elusive concept – sometimes it happens without much effort, and other times it is a an exhausting struggle between mind and body. Luckily, there are solutions – like changing the food and drinks you consume before retiring for the night. Here are a few that may be keeping you awake:
Alcohol:
It may seem like an easy way to make you feel relaxed and sleepy, but drinking alcohol actually prevents you from falling into the deep sleep you need to feel rested. In addition, it dehydrates your body which can make you wake up in the middle of the night.
Chocolate:
Put down that candy bar. Yes, studies have shown that a little bit of dark chocolate daily can do wonders for your health, but it’s best to not consume it before bedtime. Why? It contains tyrosine (an amino acid that can stimulate your mind and body) as well as caffeine.
Spicy Foods:
If you’ve ever struggled with heartburn or acid reflux you know how tough these conditions make it to fall asleep and stay asleep. Avoid these digestive disruptions by not eating highly acidic or spicy foods before bedtime.
Tea:
Unless you are drinking decaffeinated tea, you are setting yourself up for a night full of tossing and turning. If you want to relax with a cup before bedtime, simply forgo the caffeine (in all its forms).
