One of the obvious side effects of living in a society where people have a wide range of beliefs and opinions is an increase in the need for positive personal communication. In truth, this is the cornerstone of cultivating healthy relationships with family, friends, colleagues and peers. So how can you go about improving your method of communication?

Take the time to formulate your thoughts

Often times in the midst of a heated argument or discussion we speak without much thought of the repercussions, and end up feeling guilty over a misunderstanding. Speak calmly and take the time to decide what your intention is when it comes to sharing a thought or opinion. If your underlying intention isn’t entirely positive then it’s probably best to think twice before speaking.

Listen, listen, listen

Yes, you have brilliant ideas to share, but are you taking the time to listen and learn from others? If you’re hoping to achieve communication success then it’s essential to have equal parts give and take- this means listening just as much (if not more) as you speak. Even when we think we know all there is to know, there’s always something else to learn.

Choose the optimal time to communicate

If your spouse comes home in a rotten mood from a rough day at work, then it’s probably not the best time to discuss his or her lack of help around the house. Allow the stress of the day to subside so that you can both have a clear-minded conversation about other issues. Not only will they be more likely to listen to your concerns, but it’s less likely to turn into a blow-out fight.

Stay on topic

It’s easy to make personal jabs when a conversation isn’t going the way you’d planned, but unless you want to open yourself up to similar attacks, stay on topic. If you are hoping for positive results, then keep your interactions positive.

Be able to recognize differences in context

It’d be accurate to say that we all have had extremely different life experiences. These life experiences have shaped the way we as individuals see the world and communicate with others. Thus it’s important to not take everything personally when it comes to interacting with people of varying contexts. You may not understand everyone you come across, but this is how we all learn and grow.

Being able to fine tune your communication skills can not only help you in maintaining healthy personal relationships, it can also lead to overall success. Today, pay attention to how you communicate with the world around you. Recognize your shortcomings and find small ways to fix them. Others will undoubtedly see the difference.
